It is nature’s mechanism to ensure the survival of a species through primal competitiveness. Human beings are very inventive in cloaking our pursuits for water, food, shelter and nurturing progeny under the guise of civilization.
The Neanderthal man probably looked up one day and noticed that someone was consistently more successful at hunting ergo, he fed himself, his family or maybe his whole tribe. It is accurate to suggest that peer recognition will always exist as long as there is a basis for comparison, a point of reference or a perceived domination.
The recent rash of award shows viewed annually by a growing global audience is an excellent example of symbol over substance. We react viscerally to extreme simplicity or gluttonous excess because we have either a conscience or lack thereof.
What is success? Is it the ability to dream? Is it an extraordinary vision or the courage and steadfastness to attain an ideal? Is it simply surviving in the human race?
It is a logical conclusion that there will always be winners and losers, but it is useful to remember that most of us are uniquely average.
